I was lucky to see it in the cinema. Self-made hero is on DVD from Optimum – I’ll try to put up my notes on it at some point.

Mesrine Part 1 only went out on 55 prints from Momentum, but perhaps they’ve tried to go for more multiplex screens in the limited release. It made No 14 on the chart last weekend. Not bad, but dwarfed by what Love Aaj Kal managed on a smaller print run.

Not sure about Cassel’s drawing power. The film also has Depardieu, Cecile de France and Ludivine Sagnier and they can’t hurt it’s attractiveness for French cinema fans. Enjoy!

PS The Johnnie To film was originally touted as a Samourai remake with Alain Delon – so, don’t hold your breath.

Very noir though. Regarde les hommes tomber looks brilliant and so does A self made hero – I think I have missed a lot of Audiard’s work. Is Regarde les hommes tomber avaliable on DVD? I agree about your comment related to Johnny Depp, no one has ever looked cooler than Delon in a raincoat. John Woo is due to remake Le Samourai but all of his early HK films seem like an extended homage to Melville. In regards to Mesrine, it is getting quite a good release – it has even appeared in the local multiplex; is this down to Cassel’s star appeal? I was never quite sure about his appeal as a leading man, what do you think?
