Actually, I think he is a stylist, not that style is foremost, but in that it is descernible across his output: and it is very important in presenting the content of the films.
And I think we need to revisit Loach’s values – over the years and as they develop.
My abiding reservation is that in the features he tends to use narrative techniques that tend towards the conventional. I think the drama documentaries are in many ways the most politically stimulating. And I have always wondered what would happen if we had more techniques that people term ‘Brechtian’, more distance?
As for ‘It’s a free World’, i think it is very good. It is atypical in not having a positive working class hero or heroine, but it engages with contemporary politics and economics.
