I’m glad you could catch it, Stephen. I agree that it would be best to see it on a big cinema screen, but these days that isn’t straightforward. Good point about accepting his free meal. I didn’t catch the line you quote but it seems a good shout.

By: S GOTT https://globalfilmstudies.com/2018/04/26/gholam-uk-iran-2017/comment-page-1/#comment-7749 Tue, 08 May 2018 20:36:02 +0000 http://globalfilmstudies.com/?p=10934#comment-7749 I thought this was a stunning first feature by Mitra Tabrizian,with an outstanding central performance by Shahab Hosseini.The cinematography was superb,full of images that linger in the mind and I think deserves seeing on a bigger screen (I too saw it streamed on MUBI).A slow burn of a film that has had comparisons with Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” (1976) and Melville’s “le Samourai” (1967).The whole film oozed alienation,from Gholam,the migrant community and even the few white characters in the film.However,Gholams disengagement with his world and society,seemed to change when one of his taxi customers quotes,I think an Iranian writer with the lines “Your true country is where your heading,not where you are”. Suddenly,he accepts his aunts offer of a free meal (To her disgust) and sets out on the road to his Destiny.
